The Stearns County Attorney’s Office says charges will not be filed against a Saint Cloud Hospital security officer for using a taser on a suspect who had just fatally shot Aitkin County Sheriff’s Deputy Steven Sandberg. Investigators say Danny Hammond, a patient being held at the hospital for a kidnapping and assault followed by a suicide attempt, grabbed Deputy Sandberg’s gun during an altercation and shot him in the chest. Shortly after, security officer Ricky Hess Junior used a Taser on Hammond as he was lying on the floor and refused to put his hands behind his back. Hammond later died and investigators determined the Taser may have played a role. But the county attorney’s office says “the seriousness of Hammond’s conduct in causing the death of Deputy Sandberg” justified its use.
