It’s the first-ever “Utilities United Against Scams Day” and gas and utility companies nationwide are reminding customers to watch out for scams heading into winter.
Rebecca Virden with CenterPoint Energy says a “utility provider is never going to ask our customer to provide them, even if they have a past due balance, to provide them a way that they have to quickly pay, purchase a prepaid debit card to avoid disconnection.”
Virden says customers with past due accounts will receive an advance notice in the mail. If you suspect someone is trying to scam you, hang up right away and call your utility.
