The Minnesota Vikings released starting guard Brandon Fusco on Friday just two years after giving him a $24 million contract extension.
Minnesota also released guard Mike Harris, who missed the entire 2016 season due to an unspecified illness.
The release of Fusco frees up $3.2 million in salary cap space. He had three seasons remaining on his contract.
Fusco started 13 games in 2016 but also suffered his third concussion. He also experienced a drop in performance for the second consecutive season.
Fusco acknowledged his release on his Twitter account.
“This was very upsetting because this game means so much to me,” Fusco said in a statement. “I’ve had ups and downs throughout my life and this is a small hurdle I will have to get over.
“… It’s been a fun ride. I got to play and meet some great people in Minnesota. I will forever be grateful for the opportunity and hope to continue my career in another great organization. Thank you everyone! #skol”
Harris was a starting guard for the Vikings in 2015. It is unclear if his injury will prevent him from playing in 2017.
