A state commission votes this afternoon on a controversial plan to lower sentences for some non-violent drug offenses. Lars Negstad with faith-based group ISAIAH says the state is locking up way too many people who are only drug users, not dealers. Negstad says, “Many people need treatment for chemical dependency and substance abuse, and putting them in prison is not a cost-effective or particularly effective way of getting them that treatment.” The Minnesota County Attorneys Association acknowledges measured and meaningful changes should be made, but warns the current proposal will “reduce sentences for serious first time drug sellers and profiteers who… prey on our most vulnerable community members.”
