Minnesota Congressmen Tim Walz and Rick Nolan were among Democrats who joined U-S House Republicans Thursday, ignoring President Obama’s veto threat and passing a bill to restrict the flow of Syrian and Iraqi refugees coming to the U-S. Nolan, from northeast Minnesota, says he voted yes because “we must leave no stone unturned to keep the American people safe,” adding the legislation will not preclude the U-S from accepting thoroughly-vetted refugees. Walz echoes the message from southern Minnesota is that compassion for those fleeing terror is absolute, but Americans must be kept safe from harm. Other Democrats say the U-S must not abandon its committment as a safe haven for those fleeing violence in other countries.
