Governor Tim Walz outlines additional anti-COVID steps this afternoon (2pm), the day after announcing he’ll extend the state of emergency another 30 days. The emergency powers extension will trigger the sixth special session of the year on Thursday. Republicans tried the previous five times to cancel the governor’s authority without success, also trying to force Walz’s hand by ousting some of his cabinet — but it’s unclear whether G-O-P lawmakers will try again this week. They say the governor’s restrictions are seriously hurting Minnesota economy. Walz this time is talking about “targeted” restrictions or shutdowns in places where young adults are spreading COVID. Republicans say the spike in COVID cases comes from social gatherings, not restaurants and bars.
