Walz undecided on reinstating Minnesota’s wolf-hunting season

March 11, 2019 By Bill Werner

Governor Tim Walz indicates he hasn’t decided yet whether Minnesota’s wolf hunting season should be re-instated, if federal officials lift protections for grey wolves in the Lower 48 states as they reportedly plan to do. The governor says about the state’s response: “We need to follow the science on this one too, and we haven’t taken the deep dive yet.” Walz says good management of grey wolves “needs to happen” and the response must be “thoughtful” when the animals come in conflict especially with ag producers.

Doctor Maureen Hackett with the group Howling for Wolves says there are a lot of unknowns right now, but hopes at a minimum that the state does not have a wolf hunt again.
