Governor Tim Walz says he’ll ask lawmakers for an additional 16 million dollars to continue repairs on the state’s troubled vehicle licensing and registration system, MN-LARS. The system has already cost the state about 100 million dollars and Republican lawmakers have been leery of spending more without assurances that ongoing problems will be fixed. Last session lawmakers approved an emergency appropriation of nearly 10 million dollars. They also passed a nine-million-dollar bill to reimburse deputy registrars for extra costs due to MN-LARS troubles, but then-Governor Mark Dayton vetoed the measure because he wanted a comprehensive solution. Republican Representative Paul Torkelson from Hanska is urging Governor Walz to prioritize relief for deputy registrars “whose livelihoods have been devastated by MNLARS through no fault of their own.”
