A Washington County sheriff’s deputy has pleaded *not* guilty to manslaughter for fatally shooting a suicidal man in Lake Elmo during a confrontation in April 2018. A grand jury indictment alleges “culpable negligence” on the part of 31-year-old Brian Krook (CROOK). Sheriff Dan Starry says loss of life is never the desired outcome in any call and “in this tragic case, we have a grieving family and a grieving Sheriff’s Office.” Investigators say 23-year-old Benjamin Evans was holding a gun and told officers he wanted to kill himself. They say officers tried repeatedly to get Evans to put down the gun and at some point Deputy Krook fired multiple shots that struck him.
