Authorities say a Wayzata police officer, 47-year-old William Matthews, died after he was struck by a vehicle on Highway 12 this afternoon. Matthews was removing debris on the road when he was hit. He was taken to North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale, where officers from a number of departments gathered. Police have named a 50-year-old woman as a “suspect” in the case, but it’s not yet clear why they’re using that term. After the incident, helicopter footage showed a silver van or S-U-V with front-end damage stopped on the side of the road. At his swearing-in ceremony today, Minneapolis Police Chief Mediero Arradando asked for a moment of silence in honor of Officer Matthews.
