Minnesota civic leader and sports enthusiast Wheelock Whitney Junior has died. He was 89. Whitney ran as a Republican for U-S Senate in 1964, losing to Eugene McCarthy. And he ran for Governor of Minnesota in 1982, losing to Rudy Perpich. He was also a part-owner of the Vikings through the 80s and 90s. Family members say Whitney died in hospice care at his home. Governor Dayton says Whitney was a “dear family friend and was “an outstanding and influential civic leader throughout his life.”
