A wild rice-water quality bill is headed to Governor Dayton’s desk–but he’s vowed to veto the bill. Democratic Senator Erik Simonson of Duluth says that’s a concern because “we’ve got about two weeks left in session, if the governor vetoes this bill, we don’t necessarily have the time left to start this process over and come to an agreement or come to a solution.” The bill removes a decades-old rule limiting sulfate in water. Republican Senator Justin Eichorn of Grand Rapids says the current standard “isn’t right” and adds “we’ve been talking about this for more than eight years, there’s been a lot of work done. Unfortunately, the PCA didn’t come to the table and neither did some of the governor’s staff until after we passed this off the Senate floor.” Governor Dayton calls the bill an “extreme approach” and says it removes important protections for wild rice.
