The trial of Officer Jeronimo Yanez continues in St. Paul today after an emotional day of testimony Tuesday. Diamond Reynolds took the stand early and through tears identified Yanez as the killer of her boyfriend, Philando Castile. Reynolds said she live-streamed the aftermath of the shooting on Facebook because she feared for her and her daughter’s safety and she wanted people to know the truth. But the defense pointed out inconsistencies in Reynolds’ story and focused on her and Castile’s marijuana use. In dramatic dash cam video shown by the prosecution, Castile tells Yanez he has a gun in the moments before he’s shot. And in the video, Yanez admits to a supervisor after the shooting that he was nervous. In the afternoon, Yanez’ partner, Officer Joseph Kauser testified that he thought Yanez followed protocol and did what he was supposed to do in the situation. One key question that came up again and again Tuesday without any definitive answer: was Castile reaching for his wallet, his seat belt or his weapon leading up to the shooting.
